Ever since I saw this pattern on Ravelry, (non Ravelry link)  I have been wanting to dye the yarn for it.   I wanted the challenge of dyeing the graduated shades, however it had to wait until I'd returned from Australia, and for the wind to die down long enough for me to get into my workshop to do the dyeing.  I even spent part of my flight back from Perth doing a few calculations in my head with regards dye strengths.

I knew I didn't want to do it in exactly the same colours, as I wanted my dominant shade to be violet (now there's a surprise!).  After much arithmetic, I started dyeing, and here are some of the results.  This will be my main palette of graduated colours:

I thought I had been very careful when dyeing, but it is only once the yarn is dry that you can see errors.  I chose violet, which is a dye which can split and the underlying blue shade becomes dominant.  And you can see that is what happened towards the lighter shades - there are a few hanks which are just too blue for my liking.  I know why this happened, so I may  be re-dyeing these few hanks.  I may also not!  It could simply become a feature of the finished object.

For the main contrast shades I decided to go for turquoises/blues/greens and then through in a couple of golden oranges:

I really don't know how this will work until I actually start knitting, but I like the way they complement each other.

And finally, there is a stripe which runs across one side of the shawl which you will see clearly in the above photograph.  In the designer's version he used turquoises and blues for this stripe, along with a bit of pink.  I chose to go with pinks, reds and purples/plums:

I thoroughly enjoyed the dyeing challenge, but it'll be a while before I start this knitting, sadly.  I have quite a lot of other things which are demanding my attention!  However, once I am a little more certain of how all the colours mix, I may think about doing kits for the shop if there is enough demand.  In the meantime, if you would like me to dye particular colours for you to use for this pattern, please get in touch.

Many thanks to Kieran Foley for allowing me to use his photographs.
