I had to make a couple of deliveries over on the east coast today, so we decided to make a bit of a "day off" of it, and after doing the necessary business we headed off on a lovely, long drive. Once my calls were done, we headed north from Lairg towards Altnaharra. This road takes you through some of the most remote countryside in Scotland, and the landscape is one of wide, open spaces.
From Altnaharra we turned east, along Loch Naver, towards the isolated village of Syre, where we came across this beautiful little church:
I was unable to find the age of this tin church, but the stained glass windows were so simple, but so pretty:
and the church still had its original paraffin lighting:
The area reminded us both of a part of South Africa called The Platteland (the flat land). Remote,at times flat, and a little unsettling.
Heading away from the centre of the country and towards the east coast, we made our way to Helmsdale, passing through some beautiful scenery along the way:
And our reason for heading to Helmsdale? Well, to buy the best fish and chips available in Sutherland - in our view - from La Mirage chippy.
