Following on from the lectures on Saturday we decided to revisit a really interesting monument in Assynt.  Glen Leireag, close to Nedd, is an area where many families were cleared from during the Highland Clearances. But nearby Glen Leireag is a rare structure called a souterrain.  Nobody is entirely sure why these were built.   And if archeologists are entirely honest they don't really know when they were built either as far as I understand it.  They are a series of underground passages, although they look more like drains than passages.  They're too small for humans to enter, but very carefully constructed.  The photo's don't really do them justice as I had to just hold my camera down the hole and snap away in the hope of getting something reasonable to look at.

What you can see here, though, is the careful construction that has gone into building the souterraine.

You can get an idea of how small the entrance holes are now, by the size of my daysack alongside the entrance.  You can't assume, of course, that the entrances were always this size though.

And talking of stones and rocks, you'll remember recently that I added Heather and Rock to the shop.  Well I loved the colours so much, and couldn't wait to make myself a pair of socks from this colourway.  These were finished some time ago, but I've only just got around to photographing them.

I have to admit that I am really pleased with the way this colourway turned out.  The colours are exceptionally rich, and the mix of purple and grey is, in my view, lovely!
